Jess was ready a full twenty minutes before Mark was due to pick her up for the wedding. She wore her favorite dress, the one that made her feel pretty. Whether it actually did might’ve been debatable, but that wasn’t the point. She felt good, and she hoped she looked good. Most of all, she looked forward to being with Mark. She’d had a few days to think about how nice his offer was to accompany her. She’d also had time to ponder him and his divorce. Hmm. But that had nothing to do with her or their friendship. It was a really nice thing he was doing for her.

Then a thought struck her. What will he be wearing? She’d only seen him in worn jeans and T-shirts occasionally topped by a fleece jacket. Surely he would know how to dress for a wedding. Yes. Of course he would know. But would he care? Guys could be weird about stuff like that. She decided not to leave it to chance. She sent him a text message on the pretext of clarifying the overall dress code for the wedding.

Jess: Forgot to mention. The wedding isn’t black tie. Suit and tie would be fine.

Mark: ok

Jess: Preferably dark.

Mark: What color flip-flops?

Jess stared at her phone. Is he kidding? He’s got to be kidding.

Mark: I’m kidding.
